Shanty homes are illegal and are regularly destroyed by the Indonesian government to build infrastructure. The purpose of this installation is to present the fragility of citizens living in poverty. I created the base shape inspired by Bauhaus’ idea of an as-found object that is commonly found in poverty-stricken neighborhoods - peanut shells. Each structure presents a different issue underlying poverty - food supply, living conditions, aging population, women’s rights, and children. This installation indicates for individuals in poverty, urban development will continue to pose as a threat, as represented by the holes and tears in the structures.
