Cultural Collision, Mixed Media on Canvas, 60 x 80cm

This piece is influenced by cultural artists Ala Ebtekar and Basquiat as a part of my Cultural Hybridity exploration. In contrast to “The Explorer”, this portrait of my paternal grandfather depicts devotion to his Chinese-Indonesian beliefs. The Chinese newspaper strips symbolize my grandfather’s determination to maintain a connection with his culture regardless of living in a changing environment. With reference to Indonesia’s 1998 Tragedy, this piece aims to show that the interaction of two distinct cultures can be embraced harmoniously instead of resulting in chaos and mass violence.

Materials used:
Acrylic, calligraphy pen, oil pastel, chalk, oil paper, newspaper, cooking oil, drawing marker on canvas
